In Relentless Pursuit of Me: Upending the Unicorn Effect

In this powerful autoethnographic anthology, dynamic Black women unpack the complexities of their identities and lived experiences through the lens of the Unicorn Effect—a phenomenon coined by Dr. Ronicka Briscoe that captures the intense and often unrealistic expectations placed on Black women to excel professionally and personally, despite systemic barriers. Through deeply personal writings, each author examines how they’ve navigated cultural, political, and social constructs, while juggling unseen labor, managing isolation, and rising above inequity to succeed with perseverance, purpose, and power—leaving readers informed, inspired, and empowered.

The Unicorn Effect is a phenomenon where Black women are expected to excel under intense and often unrealistic demands in both personal and professional spheres, often without adequate resources, pay, or recognition. Despite systemic obstacles, they embody resilience, adaptability, and the ability to "make something out of nothing," all while juggling multiple roles and achieving exceptional success.

There was no name for this experience, and naming it allows Black women to identify the problem and better understand what they are facing. Recognizing the Unicorn Effect empowers them to see the unrealistic expectations placed upon them and respond with clarity and strength. Through this book, we encourage women to upend these pressures and relentlessly pursue the life they desire on their own terms.
